HEATH — Last weekend, the Westfall wrestling team finished seventh at the Division III District Tournament and will send three wrestlers to the State Tournament this weekend.

Out of more than 40 teams, the Mustangs placed seventh with a final score of 72 points.

Three Mustangs moved on to compete at this year’s State Tournament. Gage Bolt qualified for the State Tournament in the 165-pound weight class, where he finished in second place. Brady Speakman qualified with a third-place finish in the 106-pound weight class. Bryce Wickline qualified with a third-place finish in the 175-pound weight class.

Westfall Coach Will Breyer said Bolt did an amazing job this past weekend.

“If we got a call or two to go our way he would have been District Champ. He is hitting his stride at the right time.”

Breyer said Wickline is “Mr. Consistent.”

“He is always going to win when he needs to. He wrestles his way and is going to roll the dice at states.”

Speakman is the first freshman state qualifier for Westfall since the 90s.

“Brady has worked so hard this year and wanted to be a freshman state qualifier like his coach, Tim Geiger,” Breyer said. “And he did it. I’m so proud of him.”

Overall, Breyer thought it was a successful tournament.

“It is a hard tournament, so anytime you have multiple state qualifiers, it is a success. I know some of the guys fell short but it will give them motivation for next year.”

The Coach described how the wrestlers will prepare for the State Tournament.

“We will go hard Monday and Tuesday. Then it will be short practices with recovery after.”

The State Wrestling Tournament begins this Friday at 1 p.m. at the Schottenstein Center and ends Sunday night.
